2018 Nissan GT

After many years on the forbidden fruit list, the Nissan Skyline R32 GT-R is fair game in America. In 1999, the Skyline GT-R R34 weighed in, available through only one authorised Nissan dealer, Middlehurst Nissan in St. Helens. Mated to a 6-speed dual-clutch transmission, and running with Nissan's ATTESA E-TS All-Wheel Drive, the 2018 GT-R is still built and meant to perform.

The 2018 GT-R carries over some of last year's big updates like a 20 horsepower bump, revised styling, and a more refined powertrain. The company's Le Mans race car, shown above, used a conventional 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine to drive the front wheels and was originally meant to use a hybrid system on the rears (ultimately, it couldn't be made to work in time to race).

The original third-gen GT-R, the R32, (1989-1994) was initially intended to have a 2350cc engine capacity to compete in under 4000cc racing class, as under the era's FIA Group A touring car rules, turbo cars had their capacity multiplied by 1.7 for classification.

Enthusiast drivers rave over the earlier R32 model, being smaller and lighter than its successors. As a result, although it costs about as much as a Porsche 911 , pound-for-pound, it'll annihilate the German car on a race track - not even the range-topping 911 Turbo can match the GT-R's performance. Relentless tuning of the GT-R's aerodynamics provides an incredibly clean Coefficient of Drag of 0.26 Cd. While you see a substantial, powerful supercar, to the wind, it punches through the air like a low-slung, mid-engine supercar.

Once a tantalisingly forbidden fruit, now that the R32 GT-R is more than 25 years old, it can legally be imported into the US. This has started to have a knock-on effect on pricing, with demand for clean, unmolested cars at Japanese auctions starting to pick up noticeably.

The 2018 Nissan GT-R carries the Japanese supercar torch with en fuego twin-turbo power, all-wheel drive, and snicky dual-clutch gearchanges. With well over 300 horsepower, the GT-R is not only quick, Nissan Skyline GT-R it's very much so—particularly in poor traction situations where the all-wheel drive system comes into the fore.
